The Perfect Itinerary for Celebrating Father’s Day in the Sacramento Area

Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 18! There are so many ways to celebrate dad this year, at a number of places and events in and around Sacramento.
Take a look at our sample Father’s Day itinerary to spark some ideas for your own adventure. We realize this is an extremely jampacked day, so feel free to incorporate just a few ideas that fit your schedule and preferences.
Whatever you do, get out there and explore the city, celebrating dad all the while!
8 a.m. | Grab Coffee + Pastries
Get some fuel for the busy day at a local coffee shop! Visit your favorite neighborhood spot, or check out some of our favorite coffee shops in the area. Pair your drink of choice with a sweet or savory treat to sustain you until lunchtime.
9 a.m. | Go Fishing
Dads who enjoy fishing will love a quiet morning spent in nature, casting a line into one of Sacramento’s wonderful fishing spots. He may know exactly where to go!
Otherwise, try Folsom Lake, a fisherman’s paradise filled with king salmon, rainbow trout, black bass, catfish and bluegill. Many frequent the lake for bass, the largest of which can be found on the south side of Anderson Island in the North Fork area.
Or stick closer to the city with some river fishing between the downtown area and Discovery Park. Fish along the shore or in a boat to catch some salmon, sturgeon and catfish in the Sacramento River!
11 a.m. | Take a Train to a BBQ Buffet

The Sacramento RiverTrain has a special train excursion planned for Father’s Day. The 2.5-hour ride will give dad a taste of the Old West with a leisurely train ride culminating with a BBQ buffet at Elkhorn Park in West Sacramento. Purchase your tickets (choose from three options — Coach, First Class or Executive Class) and hop on board the train at 11 a.m. for a fun and memorable Father’s Day Experience.
12 p.m. | Eat BBQ at Raley Field
Purchase an exclusive barbeque ticket package for a Sacramento River Cats game on Father’s Day! You’ll get a ticket to the game plus access to an all-you-can-eat Father’s Day BBQ in the Sactown Smokehouse from 12–2 p.m. The BBQ lineup includes tri tip, hamburgers, Raley Field Hot Dogs, three sides, and one drink. The River Cats will play the Albuquerque Isotopes at 1:05 p.m.
1:30 p.m. | Explore Nature
If you skip all the abovementioned activities due to a laid-back morning spent at home, get out and explore nature at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center! Their special Fathers and Frogs event features catch and release activities in which you’ll discover the hidden world of water insects, polliwogs and even adult frogs. This is a free weekend program open to all ages, yet space is limited and sign-ups are taken the day of the event. There is a $5 entrance fee per car as you enter Ancil Hoffman County Park, but entrance is free to members.
2:30 p.m. | Take a Free Ride at the California Automobile Museum

If you’ve been meaning to visit the California Automobile Museum as a family, Father’s Day is the perfect day to go. The museum offers free admission for dads all day and classic car rides to the marina and back on Father’s Day every year. What a fun and memorable experience for car enthusiasts!
4:15 p.m. | Cruise Along the Sacramento River

Take in city views from a different perspective this Father’s Day. Cruise along the Sacramento River, enjoying a one-hour Hornblower Father’s Day River Cruise, featuring a narration of the nature and history of the Sacramento River in a fun, relaxing environment.
Cruises take off from the L Street Dock in Old Sacramento at 12, 1:30, 3 and 4:30 p.m. on Father’s Day, but you must arrive 15 minutes early (plus, it is recommended to purchase tickets ahead of time online) to ensure spots on the boat!
6 p.m. | Go Out to Dinner

After all this activity, it’s about time for a well-deserved dinner to celebrate dad and reflect on an amazing day spent together. The following restaurants are offering specials on Father’s Day:
The Firehouse Restaurant — Specials offered along with regular dinner menu. Seatings available from 4–9 p.m. Reservations highly recommended. The Firehouse dinner guests receive Sacramento’s Best Valet Parking Rate (only $5 per car).
Zinfandel Grille — Regular dinner menu served from 4–9 p.m. in addition to fresh fish special, in-house pasta special, and Prime Rib special. Reservations recommended.
8 p.m. | Drop Off the Kids With a Babysitter
If you aren’t too exhausted, arrange for a babysitter to watch the little ones while you grab a drink (and maybe some late-night snacks) as a couple. This is the perfect way to cap off the night!
9 p.m. | Grab a Beer

Head to LowBrau Bierhalle, where you’ll find a lively atmosphere with a great beer selection and handmade sausages to satisfy late-night hunger. In fact, things will be extra exciting on Father’s Day at LowBrau, as they host a weekly Throwback Jams event every Sunday. Music by DJ Epik and Friends starts at 9 p.m.! Sip on a local brew, snack on some hearty small bites, and enjoy the action-packed atmosphere in this modern, industrial German-style bierhalle.
