Your Guide to Spending a Full Day in Woodland, California

Situated just 20 miles northwest of downtown Sacramento, Woodland is a quaint city boasting historic buildings, a myriad of local shops and restaurants, and a well-connected community. The reasonable housing prices in Woodland make the city a viable option for the commuter or world traveler, as the airport is just minutes away.

This agricultural town is surrounded by lush farmland, providing peaceful scenery, access to farm-fresh produce and plenty of opportunity for outdoor recreation. Local government, developers and residents work tirelessly to preserve the town’s unique elements and architecture, and recently initiated a revitalization of the historic downtown area. Woodland’s Main Street is lined with charming buildings, many of which were built between 1860 and 1940. It is here where residents and visitors alike gather for community events, to grab a meal, or simply admire the charming architecture.

Whether you’re a visitor or a new resident to this charming town, consult our step-by-step itinerary for a full day spent in Woodland — or simply glean a few ideas for your next outing!

8:30 a.m. | Start With Coffee + Breakfast

Any good day starts with a cup of coffee — plus a pastry or small bite to eat. Morgan’s Mill is a relatively new coffee, beer and wine bar tucked away in the old Globe Rice Mill building. This historic building creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, the perfect place to sip on your latte and savor their sweet and savory specialty waffles. Don’t miss the airy patio with plenty of seating and shade!

10 a.m. | Visit a Museum

Under the new management of YoloArts, the Gibson Museum and Cultural Center focuses on the establishment and development of farming and ranching in the county, as shown through the life and work of William Byas Gibson and his family. Situated atop 2.5 landscaped acres, the museum represents a typical rural home and ranch setting from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries. YoloArts is currently facilitating landscape improvements and renovations to create innovative ways to experience the Gibson House and surrounding property.

12 p.m. | Grab Lunch

Woodland has no shortage of lunch spots, most of which are situated along the town’s lively Main Street.

Maria’s Cantina is an excellent Mexican restaurant bringing regional Latin recipes that blend Old World traditions with new world flavors. Enjoy tacos, chips and guacamole, fajitas, burritos, tostadas and other specialties inside the rustic/industrial interior or outside on the shaded patio.

Cappers Refresher is a great place to grab a quick bite to eat, such as a sandwich, fries, soup or salad, followed by a sweet shaved snow treat or boba tea. This new addition to the downtown area is ideal for a quick on-the-go treat!

House of Shah Afghan Urban Eats is a vibrant and modern eatery serving traditional Afghani dishes, such as halal kabobs, stews and various rice dishes. This new fast-casual eatery has been well-received since opening in 2017!

Savory Café serves traditional American breakfast and lunch plates with a menu rotating with the seasons. Lunch options include salads, sandwiches, steak, pasta and much more.

2 p.m. | Take a Stroll Along Main Street

Woodland, CA

Choose your own adventure with this next part! Simply head to historic Main Street to pop in and out of local shops lining this charming historic street. A few of our favorite shops and boutiques include Haven, A Well Stocked Home, and Avila Winters Design & Co. Make a stop at Sawyer’s Sweet Spot to satisfy your sweet tooth. In addition to offering a wide candy selection, Sawyer’s specializes in fudge and specialty chocolates, shaved ice, ice cream and milkshakes.

3:30 p.m. | Visit the Library Rose Garden

Woodland Public Library Rose Garden

During your Main Street adventure, be sure to make a detour down 1st Street or College Avenue to reach the Woodland Public Library. You may be wondering why a library is on a city itinerary, but once you see it, you’ll understand why. The library is accompanied by a beautiful rose garden filled with a colorful array of roses maintained by the Woodland Library Rose Club.

4 p.m. | Taste Regional Wines

Get a taste of the region’s best wines with a visit to Uvaggio Wine Bar. Whether you are just entering the world of wine or have been an experienced enthusiast for quite some time, Uvaggio is the ideal wine bar for you. They offer a broad selection of wines and food items with an emphasis on sourcing from Yolo County and Northern California as a whole. All of the wines at Uvaggio are handpicked to cover a variety of palates and preferences. Plus, they serve beer on tap, hard cider, and a few Soju cocktails.

5 p.m. | Enjoy Dinner

After all this activity, it’s time to unwind with a hearty dinner. Some of our favorite dinner destinations in Woodland include:

Morgan’s on Main is an inviting New American eatery celebrating the bounty of Woodland’s rich agricultural history and culinary heritage. This classy local hotspot is known for their exceptional steaks.

Las Brasas Tacos & Salsas serves some of the best tacos in town — with an equally appealing price tag! Choose from a myriad of tacos, including steak, chicken, carnitas and more, which cost just $1.75 each.

Father Paddy’s provides an authentic Irish bar experience, complete with live music, a menu with classic pub fare, and the decor of a historic bank building with pub signage. This is a great place to grab a traditional Irish meal accompanied by a beer.

Kitchen428 is a popular farm-to-fork restaurant tucked in a historic building just off Main Street. The charming motif and seasonal, locally sourced menu make this an idyllic dinner destination.
